The seventh round of the Tasman Cup Series was
fought out at Lakeside on 23rd February, and with
great wins at Sandown and the Farm, Brabham appeared
an obvious favourite. The sympathetic Queensland
crowd was obviously pulling for Matich, and with a
scorching practice lap for 58.7 secs. to his credit
Frank sat in pole position.
The Saturday practice started out in fine cloudy
weather, with many patches of seepage spoiling the
track. The foreigners came out first, Mayer
recording the best lap of 1 min. 0.4, some three
tenths of a second over McLaren, who was obviously
favouring a wounded hand. Gardner recorded a
fantastic 1 min 0.8 in the 1500 Brabham and Jack
coasted in at 1 min. 1 sec. The locals came out on a
much drier circuit and Youl equalled his record 59.6
secs to best the lot.
Final Grid positions were decided in a third
session, Matich recording 58.7 Mayer 58.8 and
Brabham 58.9, all three under Youl. McLaren was thus
set well back on the grid.
The field of 14 qualifiers for the "Lakeside 99"
assembled quite late, flagged off on a really dry
circuit with brilliant sunshine and no cloud. Matich
burst into the lead, followed into the Karrussell by
Brabham with Mayer alongside; then Youl, Gardner,
McLaren and Cusack.
The field drew out towards the completion of the
standing lap with Matich .5 of a second over Mayer,
in turn .5 sec on Brabham. Youl lay further back,
with McLaren, Gardner and Hulme packed closely. Tony
Shelly headed the 1500's of Flowers, Scott, Glass,
Walker and Ayers. The order was soon upset with the
appearance in the pits of the Walker Brabham in
flames, a fuel hose having come adrift. Walker was
later treated for extensive leg burns but the
Brabham escaped serious damage.
Matich continued in great style, leading Mayer and
Brabham by a consistent margin, recording under the
minute for every lap. Hulme moved past Cusack on the
fourth lap and quickly closed on Gardner and
McLaren.
Matich ended his great dash at the close of the
seventh lap, pulling the machine down into the grass
off the straight where it spewed oil, through a
great hole in the block without threatening the
safety of pursuing cars. Mayer now headed the field,
circulating lap for lap under the minute, with the
old master sitting back to watch.
The 1500's at the tail of the field were lapped
after some five laps, the pace really telling on the
field. Hulme moved past Gardner into the Karrussell
on the eighth lap, the little Brabham 1500
noticeably sighing as the big car drew away up
through BP bend.
Mayer parked the Cooper behind Matich's machine
after 14 laps, and immediately set about comparing
conrods, both motors being all but done for. Brabham
drew off to an untroubled lead, with team mate Hulme
harrying McLaren and Youl further back.
Gardner still lead the U/1500 class by a good
margin, but Scott and Glass kept very close company
some way back from Cusack, who spun dramatically
into the Karrussell on lap 20, losing all hope of a
second place in this section.
Racing now became quite settled, with Youl, McLaren
and Hulme very close to Jack, followed by Gardner,
Shelly and Scott. McLaren seized the opportunity on
the 45th lap, scorching past Youl on the run up
through BP. Youl eased off here, lapping at 62 secs,
which allowed Hulme to slip by and chase McLaren.
The three soon bunched again for another ten laps
till McLaren appeared to brake very late into the
Karrussell, only to be rammed into a half spin by
Hulme, who braked beautifully to avoid the Cooper
sliding backwards up the track. Youl followed
through to third spot. This order held till Hulme
was forced to retire with only four laps to go, his
front end having collapsed as a result of his shunt.
Brabham went on to a leisurely 25 second win over
Youl, in turn 30 secs over McLaren.
Brabham set a new lap record of 58.7 secs, with
Gardner recording a best lap of 60 secs in the
U/1500 section. Gardner lead Scott, Cusack and
Flowers home in this class.
