Jackie Stewart didn't put a foot wrong in the 101-mile Lady Wigram Trophy, setting a new race record. In practice he was head and shoulders above all others (1m 23.8s), and the nearest anyone could get to the Scot was Frank Gardner who clocked 1m 25s in the Mildren Brabham.

Attwood won the first preliminary heat from Clark and Spencer Martin, while Stewart was first in the second heat followed by Gardner and Palmer.

At the start of the Lady Wigram Trophy Stewart was closely harried by Gardner, Clark, Attwood and Martin. Clark moved into second place on the opening lap and Attwood also overtook Gardner in the initial stages. On lap 4 Gardner repassed Attwood and set about catching Clark. At the end of the back straight he lost his brakes and the Brabham piled into the back of Clark, putting both cars out of the race.

With only 4 laps gone, then, the order was Stewart, Attwood, Martin, Palmer, Buchanan and Dawson. After 12 laps the leader was 7 seconds ahead of Attwood, with Martin 14 seconds in arrears and Palmer not far behind the red Brabham. By the half way mark only six cars were on the same lap, and Palmer closed in on Martin. Fifth place man, Dawson, stopped at the pits on lap 21 to take on more water and he eventually had to retire on the 32nd lap with overheating problems. Caldwell was another casualty with a broken half-shaft on his Brabham. All interest centred on the dice between Martin and Palmer for third place, with Jim outbraking the Australian at the hairpin on lap 26. Less than half a lap later Spencer overcooked things at the loop and Palmer further increased his margin.

On lap 30 Stewart had a 17 second lead on Attwood, with Palmer well behind followed by Martin, Buchanan, Marwood, Levis and Riley. Buchanan's Brabham was sounding sick with a broken valve spring but he managed to make the finish in fifth place, one lap behind. The race continued on its uninteresting way, with the two BRMs coasting home easy winners.
