Jackie Stewart had yet another armchair ride at the most southern circuit in the world on January 29, with Gardner second and steady Jim Palmer third some two laps in arrears. Perhaps the most impressive drive of the day was that of Dennis Marwood who had an early race pit stop with the Rothmans Cooper and then raced back through the field to finish a highly creditable fourth, less than half a lap behind Palmer. In the latter stages, Stewart had a worrying time, for his gearbox began to give trouble on the 24th lap, and for the last few circulations he had to struggle around in third gear.

Practice proved interesting with Stewart clocking a fantastic 59.8s after only seven laps on a track he had never seen before - the first time anyone had lapped under the minute. All the 1.5 litre machinery participated in the first heat with Ken Sager leading the pack. Levis' Brabham began to misfire and he dropped from second place while Caldwell passed Hollier for third position behind Lawrence on lap 4. On the last lap Caldwell spun his Brabham at the Loop and the final order was Sager, Lawrence and Hollier.

Clark and Gardner made best of the start in the second preliminary, with the positions at the end of lap one being Clark, Stewart, Gardner and Martin. After three laps Clark's Lotus was only 1.5 seconds in front of the BRM, and the two Scotsmen flashed over the finish line almost side by side with the Lotus just holding first position.

From the start of the final it was Clark, but at the first corner Spencer Martin's Brabham, Red Dawson's similar car and Dick Attwood's BRM, who were all close behind, tangled violently. An indiscretion by Martin caused the two Brabhams to touch and the BRM flipped over Martin's car. The three cars ended off the circuit in the lupins, and Attwood was trapped underneath the BRM but suffered only minor injuries while the other two drivers were unharmed. Meantime Clark lead Stewart, Palmer, Gardner and Buchanan by the end of the first lap.

There was more drama when Clark spun the Lotus on a patch of oil in The Loop. He got the car back on the circuit a few laps later but toured around to the pits to retire with radiator damage. Gardner passed Palmer to take second position, followed by a seven second gap to Buchanan, Levis, Riley and Lawrence. Marwood's pit stop dropped him to tenth position but he soon set about catching the field, while a tussle for sixth position developed between Lawrence, Riley and Sager. Lawrence passed Riley but then slowed with a missing motor and had to pit with ignition trouble.

With 25 laps gone the order was Stewart, Gardner, Palmer, Levis, Buchanan, Sager, Marwood, Riley and Caldwell. A few rounds later Buchanan's Brabham retired with a broken cam follower. Tragedy struck on lap 33 when Bill Caldwell, who was lying in ninth place, left the track at the start of the Esses. The cause of the accident is not definitely known but it appears that the throttle on the Brabham jammed wide open, and the car left the circuit with no hope of taking the corner. The Brabham ran into a ditch, and was flipped into the air, striking a large truck. Two young spectators were fatally injured and the unfortunate Caldwell vas killed instantly.

The white flags came out with the race continuing at a reduced speed. Marwood managed to pass Levis on lap 37, while Jackie Stewart continued to have trouble with his gearbox and he slowed considerably. Due to the uncertainty of the extent of injury in the Caldwell accident, the officials wisely decided to cut the race from 50 to 46 laps. The tragedy - the first involving spectators in New Zealand and the first fatality at Teretonga - cast a gloom over the entire day and the final two races were cancelled as a mark of respect.
